3 Things to take off your to do list right now Make a list of five things you want to do that youre not doing. Now cross out all but one. Everyone can make change in our lives, but not that  much change. And youre not making the change you really want because you havent realized that you cant do everything on your list. That should be the end of the post. But its too difficult. Because the issue is  actually how much you want to accomplish  something. To do  something on your list you have to want it so much that you will give up the other stuff. So whats hard is paring down the list to just one thing, and thats keeping you from doing any of the things that matter to you. So Im going to help you. Here are three ideas  . A career that changes the world for the better.   Careers where someone is actually changing the world are also the careers where people are totally driven. They work long hours and they are hyper-focused on their mission. This is what is required to change the world. Most people dont actually want that, because no one who is dreaming about switching to  that career will ever have that kind of career. If you truly want it, you already have it. If you dont already have it, then what you probably really want is a job thats meaningful to you. But meaningful jobs that are not all-consuming are volunteer jobs. I mean, really, why should someone pay you to casually, and comfortably help make the world a better place? If you have a job now, its probably fine. For now. Most people who want to have a meaningful job that does not preclude a home life end up taking care of their own kids. Or having a job that pays very little. I know. This is not popular to say, but its popular to do (especially INFJs who are most likely to want a meaningful job, most likely to loathe the business world, and most likely to say they are not having kids until the day they have them.) A significant other.   In order to find someone who is not a complete loser, you have to admit to the whole world that you hate being alone and you are sick of being lonely and you want someone to love you. A lot of you will think that sounds desperate and needy. You know who does not think this sounds desperate and needy? The people who have a long-term commitment from a loving partner. The most well-adjusted, capable, wise people want to be with someone who needs them. No one wants to feel disposable, and the opposite of disposable is needed. To make someone feel needed, you have to tell them you have needs. Which means you need to make time in your life to feel lonely. Because if you never feel lonely, you dont have a need for someone to meet. And if you do not have time to experience loneliness then you have not made room in your life for someone to come into it. So to find a significant other, you need to give up whatever is taking up so much of your time. You need to give up the idea that you are SO BUSY. You need to sit at home, sit with yourself alone, and figure out what you need instead of what you have. Time for yourself. This is, of course, the anthem of women who have kids and a job. I confess that I have never heard a guy tell me he needs time for himself. I have only heard men say they have no idea when the baby takes a nap. Time for myself is always on my own list. So I did what all time management gurus (who I do not like but whatever) do:   I created a schedule that included time for myself. I scheduled 40 minutes for yoga every morning but then I didnt want to do it so I drank coffee instead. I felt bad that I was not following my schedule so I added a lot of milk and sugar and I drank it fast like an addict and it seeped into the next, non-yoga part of my new schedule. I also scheduled time to read. But I think I have to be honest about reading in that I get way more pleasure from working. I mostly just read to work. (Example: I just read an issue of Departures magazine. Melissa had  it because she is super-genius-golden-platinum on American Airlines.  I only read it because I knew I could tell you about things the super-rich care about,  because who isnt curious about that? What I learned is that just like  a new car has a distinct smell, a new  trench coat has a distinct smell as well. And Burberry scent aficionados say new trench coat smells like  a combination of cardamom, lavender, tarragon and grapefruit.) So its not that I want time for myself. Im really good at knowing what I want to do and then actually doing it. I am already doing what I want to do. So my to do list (and maybe yours too) is the list of stuff I dont actually want to do that much. Its all equally not-essential to me. Nothing is so important that I would cross off everything else for it.

Ms. Career Girl Meets Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser As part of Extras 3pm Snackdown Challenge (Pick up a pack, put down that snack!- love it) I was invited to get on a call with Bob Harper, celebrity trainer from The Biggest Loser. Ive been on these types of calls before. I fully anticipated being one of 97 bloggers packed on to the line, all vying for the chance to ask even one generic weight loss question at the mercy of an unenthusiastic moderator. So I was confused when I heard a man with a slight southern accent say, Hey Nicole! Um Hi Bob! Since I had 40 fabulous minutes to myself with Bob (oo la la!) I had the chance to ask him questions about the types of things we discuss here on mscareergirl.com. How Bob Harpers Career Began Bob Harper didnt go to college and said it wasnt even an option for him. He started his career working at a bank and feeling very out of place there. After realizing this career path wasnt for him, Bob took the initiative to get certified as a personal trainer. Bob knew if he wanted to make it big in personal training, hed need to go to L.A. so he packed his car up and moved from Nashville to L.A. to become a celebrity fitness trainer. I asked him how people in his life reacted to this career shift. He said some people thought he was crazy but as soon as he started being a personal trainer he knew he found his lifes purpose. As Bob approaches his 10th season on The Biggest Loser, its apparent that ignoring the naysayers in his life was a great choice. Fitness and Weight Loss Of course we did talk about fitness and weight loss too. Although Bob has trained some of Hollywoods finest, he said that he much prefers to train the average person rather than someone he needs to get from a size 2 to a size 0. He thinks of himself as their cheerleader and says he needs to constantly ram positivity down their throats until they start to believe it themselves. I asked Bob if he thinks a lot of The Biggest Loser contestants have genetic issues contributing to their weight issues. He said, Very, very rarely and believes that most of the folks he sees have an unhealthy emotional relationship with food. I did confirm that contestants receive psychiatric evaluations before coming on the show, and have access to a therapist throughout. And what about all the controversy surrounding life after the show? Bob says that has been one of his biggest challenges over the years. He gets so close to the contestants while they are on the show and tries his hardest to stay in touch with all of them after. He said he thinks of himself as an ER Doctor and said, I try to give them as many tools as I possibly can to get them back into their normal lives. He feels that after the show it is the individuals responsibility to take what they have learned and apply it each day. One of the tools trainers like Bob suggest is Extras 3pm Snackdown challenge.   Rather than reach for a snack when you feel hungry, chew sugar free Extra gum instead. Guarding Your Reputation Requires 24/7 Attention - Pathfinder Careers Guarding Your Reputation Requires 24/7 Attention I got thrown for a loop today   Real-life situations always are mind-boggling on the twists and turns they take because the truth is, as we always know, stranger than fiction. Such is the case today, which underscores a point I like to make about how we ALWAYS need to be vigilant about our own reputation management. So here’s the scenario on what happened to me: ______________________________________ One of my career industry colleagues received a curt voicemail from a company requesting a complete employment verification on me. (How very odd, especially as I have been in business almost 5 years now and haven’t applied for any jobs during that time!) The person who had been contacted was very concerned as the request came out of the blue and wasn’t appropriate since  I do collaborate with them, but never have been in their employment. So they only answered a few questions before refusing to provide any more information. As a heads-up, they then sent me an email about this request, as well as a transcript of the voicemail plus the contact information for the company who was requesting the verification. I sat there, scratching my head and reading this colleague’s message, trying to understand what had just transpired. What in the heck is this all about?, I wondered. So then I jumped into action. I Googled the phone number of the requesting company. Turns out that it is a collections company for student loans. Huh????  WTH??? I paid those off 10+ years ago. The hair on the back of my neck started to rise. Is someone misrepresenting me? Then I made a call to the company and got a run-around by a vacant-minded receptionist, then transferred to an aggressive representative who immediately asked for my SSN number (which I didn’t give out), so I called back in again and got a different person. Then I asked to be transferred to a managerthinking, let’s just take this up to the next level. And that’s where things started to get interesting. Long and short of it, turns out that there is another person in my geographic area with the same name, but different DOB and SSN number who defaulted on their student debt. Apparently, this collections company had stumbled across my information online and erroneously connected the dots between me and this other person, and assumed we were one and the same. Nope. And my continuing concern? That this company actually started to take a bite out of my professional reputation by contacting industry colleagues while armed with the wrong information and a ill-informed assumption.  Their call planted a question in my industry colleagues mind which wasnt there before about my integrity. I told the company that they needed to cease and desist in contacting careers industry colleagues about this situation- that there is a totally different person who is not me that they need to pursue. But more importantly, I needed to stop the spread of their erroneous assumption before they tarnished my reputation even more with additional folks in the industry. At this point, I think I have the matter contained.  But if it continues, legal action might be needed to prevent additional reputation damage. But this whole story truly underscores that we need to be ready and proactive in dealing with issues impacting our reputations online and offline any minute and any hour.  It requires 24/7 vigilance, and immediate action.   Think of yourself as your knight defending your domain.  No one else is going to do it for you, and if you allow someone to violate your  sovereignty, the damage could be irreparable. Always take steps to find out what is online about you, and have a plan to deal with the things that come up that you cant anticipate.  Be swift and forceful in dealing with inaccurate information, and take detailed notes in case the first attempt doesnt solve the problem. You and you alone are the guardian of your reputation never forget this and never let your guard down. Your reputation depends on it.
